Laid Back Vol. 1
Boptism, 2026
8/10
The trumpeter and composer Rich Willey brings plenty of grooves to these 7 songs, where an 11 piece ensemble joins him for the many lively solos.
The reggae spirit of “Laid Back (Night Life)” opens with Paul Mutzabaugh’s playful keys and John Swana’s meticulous EVI adding much to the rhythm and grooves, and “Triple Play” follows with Willey’s lively horn and Charles Heath’s frisky drums that add much charm.
“Long Lost Brothers” and “Ladies First” occupy the middle spots. The former makes great use of Felton Offard’s well timed guitar that suits the rich brass, while the latter gets cozy with its soothing atmosphere and infectious key interaction.
“Hip Slick & Cool” exits, and allows for Jim Gailloreto’s bright sax to shine in the textured album highlight.
An album with a feel good appeal, Willey’s vision gets us on the dance floor, injects plenty of fun and island flavor and tips its hat to jazz thanks to the arrangements by Willy Minko.
