Better known as Adanowsky, here the French-Mexican artist continues his radiant brand of indie-folk that’s coupled with Brazilian rhythms and plenty of breezy, joyful atmosphere.

Though Jodorowsky has sung in many languages in the past, here he sticks with Spanish, and Latin flavored fun fills the listen with upbeat progressions, laid back Caribbean moments and instrumentation that occasionally brings in muffled horns to the otherwise worldly folk affair.

Reportedly taught guitar by George Harrison, this first album under his actual name (he has several to his credit as Adanowsky) was penned during a flourishing time when Jodorowsky’s son was being born and the songs reflect this with sunny, glowing, dreaminess that’s impossible not to smile to while listening.

A Brazilian/American outfit that began in Brooklyn, NY, Added Color have kept a hectic touring schedule the last couple years, and this 2nd EP documents their varied and atypical version of alt-rock.

A powerful and quick listen of 5 tunes, most of the effort involves tense and loud sounds that are exceptionally daring, as well as subtle funk nods while being vocally robust and outspoken.

Though the strong grooves often hint at NYC hardcore influences (think Helmet and Orange 9mm), the Brazilian roots of half the band bring an international flair that’s hard to pinpoint and quite exciting and separates this outfit from the legions of similar heavier rock bands that exist today.

Metalheads along with punks and even radio rock fans will find plenty to enjoy here, and the softer, eclectic instrumentation, especially on the 2nd half of “Mr. Industry”, brings much variety to the EP.

The brainchild of drifter David Boone, as Alberta his songs flow like, well, no one else, really, while simultaneously reminding you in an abstract way of all your favorite bands.

Largely a minimalist affair and with plenty of experimental influences, “Outta My Head” starts off with emotive vocals and a lo-fi country- rock appeal but it doesn’t take long for things to simmer down, and by “Parlour” we’re into darker, calm and soulful atmospheres. Later on, “Clueless” brings blues ideas while “Baby Don’t Blow Your Head Off” sounds like something you might hear at a jazz lounge. The album highlight, “Jay Walk’n”, shows even more creativity in its dark, raw and textured indie-rock that’s as mysterious as it is enticing.

Good luck trying to figure this one out. Somewhere between Americana, blues-rock and art-rock, Alberta takes on properties from the most unexpected recesses of indie-rock and mashes them into a Tom Waits-ian experience that’s as enjoyable as it is perplexing, but in all the best ways.

The Cuban pianist and composer is back with his 4th album, and Michael Olivera and Munir Hossn are on board with the mostly instrumental tunes that explore dreamy soundscapes with plenty of jazz acrobatics. While some tunes are bursting with quick, flourishing melodies, others, like the emotive “World Of Colors” are tinted with the sort of melancholy that lends itself to mulling things over.

It’s no surprise that Rodriguez has been Grammy nominated, as the piano playing here is nothing short of awe-inspiring, and it’s even more impressive that most of these tunes were recorded in one take. The legendary Quincy Jones, who discovered Rodriguez a decade ago, turns the knobs, giving this a very spontaneous and pristine feel.

It’s been an impressive year for neoclassical sounds, and the French-Canadian artist Alexandra Streliski is adding to that greatness. While she’s already seen quite a bit of fame with her work featured on the HBO show Sharp Objects and movies like Dallas Buyers Club and Demolition, this full length really captures what she’s capable of in longer durations.

It’s been 8 years since Streliski’s debut and this 2nd album expands on her rich, cinematic and cascading sounds of intimate and stirring art. Entirely based around the piano, we are treated to dainty lullabies, warm vintage sounds and even a faint amount of synth in the ambient “Interlude”.

It is truly amazing what Streliski does with keys here; dramatic and melancholic atmosphere as well as calm beauty build and unfold with the utmost poise. A nearly impossible journey to not be drawn to, the overwhelming emotional and expressive sounds that, without words, speaks volumes about the human experience, are on par with the best piano music being made today.

Now back in his birth state of Idaho and on his own, Sheppard’s 2nd solo album (he previously fronted The Gypsy River Haunts) has him sounding like an old soul whose been peering deep into the recesses of his mind.

At 10 tracks with nearly half not even hitting the 3 minute mark, Sheppard manages to cover a lot of ground here with Americana and alt-country leanings that are part twang, part old school country and the sort of folk music that brings to mind Bob Dylan, as Sheppard’s own drawl has some wavering similarities.

An honest, warm and sincere listen, even though we’ve heard similar music from countless artists, Sheppard has impressive songwriting prowess that warrants repeated listens.

A prominent part of the DC punk scene for decades now, Connolly is getting a late start on making music, but takes her lifelong involvement within the DIY community and uses it to her advantage. On this very pensive and reflective album, she even has members of Fugazi, Beauty Pill and Teething Veils helping her out with their respective talents.

Perhaps surprisingly, this debut sounds like nothing like the circles Connolly generally travels in (Minor Threat used to practice in her family’s basement), and instead bares more resemblance to Leonard Cohen or Elliott Smith. A very direct album, Connolly’s voice is gentle yet powerful and she doesn’t hide behind metaphors or any ambiguity, relaying stories in a very confessional and forthright manner.

Though most of the listen is quite sparse, the plugged in and fuller “3 Times” and Russian sung “Starik Kozlodoev (Akvarium)” are welcomed deviations, and the album even closes on a Shellac cover (“Copper”), where Connolly strips the tune bare and then builds it back up to forceful strumming.

There’s no shortage of aging punks picking up acoustic guitars these days, but Connolly’s rich history and unguarded storytelling make for a moving and uninhibited experience.

The Richmond, VA heroes return with a 2nd album of their scrappy ‘60s stylings and garage-punk sounds that borrow heavily from psyche influences and rarely follow predictable patterns.

Though much of the record is raw, retro-rock and proto-punk, jangly pop makes an appearance on the restrained “Long Way Down”, and “It’s Her Eyes” is their form of balladry with deep organs and a sturdy rhythm. Where the band really shine are the rowdy, swagger filled yelpers like “You Turn Me Bad”, and the Lou Reed-esque “She’s Obsessed With Herself”, where warbling psyche infiltrates the unrefined rocker.

If you’ve still got a soft spot for the bands involved in the British Invasion in the mid ‘60s or really appreciate the vintage rock that existed in Detroit many decades ago, The Ar-kaics should be occupying much of your time.

Originally from Chicago but residing just about anywhere and everywhere over the years and often in Houston, Arthur Yoria is a wandering Americana troubadour who has been very active since 2001 with international acclaim for both his one man band prowess and full band work.

Though the album leads with the piano heavy “Maybe”, it’s not long before guitars and varied organic sounds tip toe around the lighter side of indie-rock with Latin influences, soothing country twang, and pop haze that’s nothing short of mesmerizing.

A fantastic surprise here is Yoria’s cover of “Last Caress” (Misfits), where he strips the tune bare to hushed vocals and just an acoustic guitar, and alters the lyrics to fit Dan & Brock Turner, as he takes a firm stand against sexual assault with grace.

It’s somewhat surprising that Yoria took up music in college; the ease at which he plays and writes not to mention the skill involved points at someone who has been honing their craft since childhood.

Expect After You to appear on many Year End Lists; it’s one of the highlights of 2018.

Three years ago I became acquainted with this Minneapolis outfit, and at about the same time I came to the realization that Bad Bad Hats would eventually be a big big deal. Well, with this 2nd album, that time should be about now, as this power-pop and refined version of indie-folk is nothing short of a masterpiece.

A generally louder, fuller effort, while Kerry Alexander's pristine vocals still sound younger than her years, the band sound more mature, more confident and even experiment with their talents via glorious melodies and a healthy amount of synth.

One of, if not the best indie-pop bands today, there will probably be a time when Bad Bad Hats will be spoken in the same sentence as Soul Asylum, The Replacements and The Jayhawks as legendary music from the Twin Cities.

A collection of Houston’s finest musicians and brass players come together on this debut album where 9 hands bury us in funk and roots rock.

Despite there being just 6 tunes present, BCF pack a giant amount of energy and thrill here, starting off with the instrumental “Piledriver”, where mesmerizing guitars break into a flurry of horns. Elsewhere the ensemble hints at calmer blues territory and some subtle detection of Latin influences, all while keeping your body unable to sit still.

Mostly, though, despite plenty of eclectic sounds, BCF are revivalist and horn dominant funk that do a fantastic job of keeping the spirit of the vintage genre alive, that, despite being an extremely fun and cultured listen, just begs to be experienced live.

Betsy Hershey, AKA BETS, returns with a 2nd album of her lush, aberrant pop sounds that are fully immersed in dreamy atmosphere and iconoclastic electro-pop ideas.

“Another Night” leads the record and comes out swinging with abstract and mysterious pop that’s restrained yet playful, and that idea extends into the scrappy and ominous synth of “Out Of View”. Later on “All I Want” is a perfect mix of indie-folk and dance-pop that would have fit in well on the Kill Rock Stars roster in the late ‘90s, and “The Day Beside Me”, with its radiant acoustic strumming and glorious vocals from BETS, is worth the price of admission alone.

Though the themes here revolve around the tribulations of being an artist- something that BETS is fully versed in- the music is positively glowing with whirlwind melodies and much creativity and fresh breath in a very crowded genre.

If you enjoy the sounds of brass, you’ve come to the right place, as DC’s Black Masala bring horns in spades to this lively affair that takes on the energy of ska-punk as well as gypsy rock sounds that few could parallel.

The title track leads off the album with the wildness of ‘90s ska-punk (think Voodoo Glow Skulls), though it then settles comfortably into driving avant garde rock that pulls inspiration from several continents with plenty of bluesy guitar solos and Kirsten Long’s powerful and smooth vocals steering the ship.

Ultimately a party album, Black Masala bring the style of New Orleans and complicated Balkan influences where funk, world music and soul are welcomed with open arms. The album looks and sounds fantastic; one can only imagine how animated the live show must be.

A compilation of artists on the Blight. roster from current to years ago, we get 15 exclusive tracks that carry on the time honored tradition of fantastic independent music from our Nation's Capitol.

Although there isn't a dud here, highlights include Swoll's cryptic, experimental, electronic sounds, the soulful aspect and vocal harmonizing of Crab Legs, and the thick, fuzzed out guitars of Another Heaven. The best tune, though, is from Park Snakes, whose scuzzy, noisey version of garage and punk is worth the price of admission in itself.

A staunch DIY label, though most of the album is on the darker side of the equation, many variations of unorthodox sounds are touched on here with plenty of adventurous and atypical arrangements. Fans of electronica will especially enjoy the efforts of Blacklodge + em.g., where unusual synth processing results in an unclassifiable but enlightening listen.

A limited run on cassette,, it includes 5 panel artwork, a download code and the cassette is even red.

Bob Margolin

Bob Margolin knows a thing or two about the blues. In fact, he knows so much, he played every note and sang every word on this self-titled album that he says is about his challenges, history and future, and he even recorded, produced and mixed it, too.

What he didn’t do is write 9 of the tunes here- those are reworkings of classics by his heroes and friends, including Muddy Waters, The Band, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Rogers, Snooky Pryor, Pinetop Perkins, Bob Dylan and James Cotton.

Of the covers, there’s not a dud present, but Dylan’s “I Shall Be Released” sounds exceptional in this blues surrounding, and Pryor’s “Peace Of Mind” recruits harps for a particularly rockin’ tune despite the somber wordplay. Margolin’s originals are nothing to spit at either. “Mercy” brings us strong lyrics and even stronger blues guitar chops and “Head Held High” illustrates his timeless sense of rhythm while vocally being one of his most alluring tracks.

Margolin’s slide guitar work here is nothing short of a refined art, and his originals puts this in a category of must hear modern blues that really touches on the human experience, while the renditions are ideal for the vintage fan as well.

While there's plenty of novelty records out there, this one is truly unique. Though there's only 2 tunes present, both sides play from THE INSIDE OUT. Two entirely different versions of “London Skinhead Crew” exist here, Reggae and Original, which might be the quintessential Booze & Glory tune, both lyrically and musically.

Side A is the Jamaican/reggae interpretation of the song, complete with lively horns and is likely to get you out of the pit and onto the dance floor with its laid back, cozy ska vibe. The B-side is the original and is about as authentic as a modern day punk tune can get. Sing-a-longs, talk of drinking together and melodic fist pumping energy make this a future classic punk rock anthem.

Depending on where you pick this one up, the color of the vinyl will be different. Looks like the band's merch table has the rare gold version, which is even more reason to see their charged version of Oi! live.

Post-punk comes in many different forms these days, and in the case of this Los Angeles duo it's a varied and memorable experience where searing, melodic sounds and tuneful grittiness draws parallels to Touch and Go Records as well as '80s New Wave stars.

While some tunes are giant, frenzied rock'n'roll where power and attitude are present in spades, elsewhere we get dance-friendly electro-pop and even groove filled, bluesy moments appear. One thing that never wavers are the strong vocal acrobatics from Amber Bollinger and the sharp songwriting prowess from Alex Dezen (The Damnwells), whose chemistry really make this debut album stand apart from the flock.

If you're keen on what the Yeah Yeah Yeahs are doing, and still spin your Blondie records occasionally, you need to hear this.

Adam and David Moss, identical twins living in Brooklyn, make up The Brother Brothers, but don’t think for a second that this is your standard ultra-hipster outfit of genre defying noises that we often associate with their borough. Instead, the pair bring us back to simpler times with minimal instrumentation, heartfelt melody and a very delicate delivery.

While most of the listen follows a path similar to legends like Simon & Garfunkel, the duo also inject Klezmer ideas, orchestral backdrops and occasional banjos and fiddles that hint at influences much more south than their home state.

Sure, the musicianship here- often finger picked- is nothing short of timeless and filled with warm beauty, but what really stands out are the gorgeous vocal harmonies sprinkled everywhere. They’re crisp, pristine and possess an old time feel that really focuses on the art of singing while everything else is stripped bare, especially on Buck Meek’s “Sam Bridges”, where the brothers remove percussion but inject stunning vocal work.

With folk music making a sizable comeback in recent years, this first album from The Brother Brothers should be well received; it’s cozy, nostalgic and the two-part harmonies and orchestral twang add a uniqueness to the listen that warrants repeated listens.

A producer, musician, singer and emcee, this sophomore album from Calvin Valentine (AKA Bong Mayer) brings R&B into his hip-hop vision, and allows his enormous talent to come out from behind the scenes to front and center stage.

A record that sounds a lot like his new Los Angeles home, Valentine’s hooks and melodies are vivid, sunny and dripping with West Coast feelings and full of endless grooves that are hard to resist and easy to absorb.

Valentine can sing and rap, and the former shines on the soulful and restrained “Choppers In The Sky”, while “911 Turbo” brings a hazy, playful anthem for stoners. The contributions on “Freethrows” from Danielle Henderson recruits gorgeous female backing vocals, and help from Illa J on “Vhs” gives the album a dynamic element to the album closer.

As to be expected when you consider his past work, the production here is top notch in a vintage sort of way. Add in his creative beats and linguistic acrobatics and you have a record made for radiant summer days.

Together with The Kind Souls band, Arzate has been consistently utilizing the influence of his dusty, desert Tucson roots and affinity for folk, rock, R&B and sounds that he refers to as ‘Sonoran Soul’ to make ultra-creative records. That theme continues seamlessly on this 2nd album.

An extremely varied listen, while dramatic, Spanish influenced tunes like “Aye Princesa” help illuminate his strong vocal work, others, like “Broken Glass”, bring bright horns to a very R&B affair. Later tracks offer us majestic, calming string arrangements that add greatly to the highly sophisticated and cultured album, and Arzate’s vast influences from Springsteen to Otis Redding thankfully aren’t tough to spot across the entire effort.

Fans of genres as wide was folk, indie and blues and who appreciate vintage sounds as well as inventive songwriting will find plenty to embrace on this extremely well executed sophomore album.

Following a few really strong EPs, MacDuffie comes through with a debut album that was certainly worth the wait. The vast sounds present are as varied as her influences, which stretch from Boy George to Neil Young, and she even brings in ukuleles and programming for the effort.

An album themed around the redemptive qualities of erotic love, songs like “I Let You Kiss Me” and “Over Again” are certainly cautious and romantic, but MacDuffie rarely stays in one place long as she takes on reggae with “Love Chased Me”, psyche-influences on “Rising Sun” and the country-pop of “Come For Me”, which sounds right at home where the album was recorded, Nashville.

Macduffie has an unwavering sensual approach to her song craft, but here she really ups the ante with daring leaps, especially on the album highlight “Why Can’t He Be You” (popularized by Patsy Cline), where anthemic, punk energy brings an entirely different level of enthusiasm to Kiss Make Better.

Carrington’s first LP is as adventurous as she is in other aspects of her life (she also flies planes and knows her way around a gun), and hopefully with this outing she’ll see the recognition she deserves.

The Jester's Court

Probably better known as an integral part of Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Chris Caffery has been focusing on his solo work in recent years, and this 6th LP comes with plenty of help from members of Whitesnake, Night Ranger, and Foreigner, among others. Though Caffery handles vocal duties, guitars and some keys, his friends help shape a very eclectic and technical listen that expands on various forms of hard rock.

While the album starts off with all the hallmarks of traditional metal- giant riffs, intimidating singing and a thundering approach- later on we get audacious sounds of arena rock, moody synth, and even classic rock, as well as some nods to '80s metal and with plenty of grooves.

Occasionally, Caffery's singing, which resembles a more sinister Alice Cooper, takes a break, and the vast talent of musicians comes through with captivating instrumentals, proving that the musicianship is truly what makes this album.

For his 4th album, trumpeter Chris Pasin and his band take on the work of Ornette Coleman and his partner Don Cherry, as the ensemble dabble in free jazz while paying homage to the seminal legends.

With plenty of support on vibraphone, piano, alto sax and sparing vocals, Pasin and company bring us plenty of classic sounds, and in the case of “Ghosts”, tremendous interplay between sax and trumpet while the breathy vocals from Ingrid Sertso cement the tune as one of the best. Elsewhere, “Lonely Woman” is on the darker side of the equation with busy, addictive musicianship, while “Tomorrow Is The Question” brings blues influences, “Just For You” is the lone ballad with graceful, romantic beauty and “Jayne, a song about Coleman’s one time wife, is nearly 10 minutes of bright horns and playful sounds with excellent percussion.

“OCDC” and “PTU” are Pasin’s originals, and show his avant-garde talents with flourishing melodies. While the former is a joyous and jubilant adventure, the latter shares a similar spirit with bursts of frothing energy.

Pasin has already collaborated with Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Nancy Wilson and here he proves he can hold down the fort as a frontman, as this is a fine, thriving example of his ability to keep the spirit of retro jazz alive.

Another great listen from the Philadelphia outfit, and though it's a quick EP, they cover a lot of ground in under 20 minutes. Definitely more on the indie rock side of the equation, there's an irresistible energy here with strategic and alluring melodies while the band spread their wings a bit with Americana, blues and a crisp soulful spirit to their '90s rock energy.

Front woman Mariel Beaumont's shimmering, pretty vocals will make you want to dig out your Sleater-Kinney records, and though relationships are often part of the subject matter, it's all delivered very eloquently and with sophistication both lyrically and musically.

The EP ends on “Home”, which might be their best tune yet, where driving guitars and memorable songwriting meet in an indie-rock treasure.

I think we can all name a couple of fantastic Sacramento bands off the top of our heads, but few of those will resemble the dark, cryptic post-punk of Creux Lies. Extremely indebted to the '80s, this debut album is never short on dreamy melodies and hosts plenty of reverb and synth with great appeal, even if on the darker side of the equation.

Often times getting close to a less gloomy, updated version of goth, the booming vocals and calculated noisey parts sound like they should reside on a mixtape between The Cure and The Chameleons, but don't let song titles like “Eulogy” fool you, as there's a charming quality here not unlike New Order that is somehow both sweet and ominous.

A very impressive first album with enormous talent present, The Hearth is most likely a precursor for very big things for Creux Lies.

Originally released in their home country of Spain and known there for penning the best punk rock album years ago, those of us on this side of The Atlantic can finally enjoy the timeless fist pumping anthems and harmonic tunes of Crim thanks to this colorful repress from Pirates Press Records.

Though nothing here is in English, the fiery rhythm section (think Hot Water Music and Leatherface), driving guitar work with occasional solos, and ultra gruff vocals are immediately identifiable as classic regardless of language.

The garage punk project from Donny Paycheck (previously of Zeke) and Jason Cutthroat, this debut from the pair of real life barbers sears, cooks and blows hinges off doors with the legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, Mudhoney) turning the knobs.

Song titles like “Kill 4 U” and “Teenage Pain” give you some idea of the themes present, and the music follows suit with both charged guitar riffs and slide guitar, while plenty of intense and restrained percussion from Paycheck draws lineage from greats like The Cramps and The Gun Club but are reinvented in their sinister, mysterious and grungy fashion.

Not as easy to put a finger on as you might think, blues influences are present, as are hard rock and alt-rock ideas, and songs like “Violent Crimes” are hazy psychobilly balladry at it’s finest. “Oceans Of Fire”, one of the many highlights, even brings to mind mid-period Social Distortion on steroids.

A raw and gritty listen, this one isn’t for the timid, but certainly still holds plenty of crucial melody beneath the exquisite racket.

As you might assume from the album title, Omaha educator and musician Dana Murray is a socially conscious artist, and this debut seeks to spark dialogue between folks who otherwise wouldn’t be discussing very important issues with each other.

Penned from the vantage point of his reality, Negro Manifesto uses varied sounds and spoken word to convey realities of deep seated racism and sexism, often times uncovering truths about status quo that we all need to acknowledge. Musically, this one is all over the place. While songs like “In The Beginning” are hectic and seem like 3 tunes colliding at once, others like “Comfort” are bare with just strong female vocals and minimal guitars and synth.

A multi-instrumentalist, Murray takes up percussion/drums, synth and vocals, though he gets plenty of help from others, especially with vocals. Generally being unclassifiable, there’s plenty of soundbites scattered around hazy hip-hop, electronica influences and other worldly jazz ideas that often times don’t initially make sense, but somehow find a way to weave into memorable, compelling songs.

A very challenging listen, it’s well worth the effort and there’s enough political and historical commentary to both analyze and enlighten. Murray’s raw version of Tammy Wynette’s “Stand By Your Man” alone is worth picking this up.

The lead guitarist and occasional vocalist for The Kinks, though Dave Davies is now in his 70s, he shows zero signs of putting a halt on rock’n’roll, and even plans on touring in 2019 for this new album.

A collection of unreleased tunes recorded in the ‘70s recovered by his sons in attics and storage, the tracks here sound relevant to any decade since their recording. “Cradle To The Grave”, recorded in 1973, starts the album off with emotional singing and raw guitar rock, which one could argue sums up most of the album, really. Being the jack of all trades, though, that Davies is, “Islands” has proto-punk written all over it while “Give You All My Love” is glorious ‘60s pop.

Largely considered one of the best guitarists of all time, the musicianship is, of course, top notch and the instrumentals “The Journey”, with its guitar strumming and prog ideas, and the folky blues of “Shadows”, reinforce the unparalleled skill of Davies.

Though these tracks were recorded years apart, they flow well with each other, sounding like a very cohesive record. Listening to the gritty tunes here, one can’t help but wonder what else could have become of The Kinks had the younger Davies contributed more of this superb work during the ‘70s.

Don’t let the fact that David Julia is only 17 years old deter you from giving this fine album a spin. With 10 years of performing experience already, this youngster plays the guitar with a skill well beyond his years, and writes song from the perspective of an old soul.

Of the 11 tunes present, slightly more than half are Julia originals, while others are renditions of songs from JP Soars, Tab Benoit, Michael Burks, Albert Castiglia, and Matt Schofield. Though Julia handles both guitar and vocal duties, his band also bring in pianos and organs, and together the sounds they emit span many decades of warm, spirited rock’n’roll.

While each tune contains a soulful vigor and strong blues influences, a couple are certainly indebted to the ‘50s with an upbeat oldies feel and plenty of slow burning rockers like “Throw Me A Rope” and the extremely sincere “Empty Promises” illustrate a very mature songwriting stance.

David Julia isn’t your average teenager and Inspired isn’t your typical blues album. If this timeless and sturdy album is any indication, there are big things on the horizon for this young man.

Swedish hard rock with ex-members of Trace Of Lords and Destynation, this 4th album from Days Of Jupiter brings metal, rock and plenty of power to a dense and melodic 12 tunes.

Heavy on guitar riffs and booming percussion, though all the tracks have thick and aggressive qualities, we are treated to some grunge influences on the chugging title track “Panoptical”, which could have easily ruled radio rock in the late ‘90s in The States, while “Swallow” illustrates their strong musicianship and thundering approach that is sure to appease metalheads on both sides of The Atlantic.

Of the calmer moments, “Black Hole” scales us back to balladry with acoustic guitars and some faint strings, and “Shallow Side” begins soft and reflective before building into ebbs of emotive and stirring arena rock.

A band who are skilled at both abrasive and restrained song craft, Panoptical possesses the best qualities of loud versus soft dynamics with some excellent singing to boot.

Now 8 albums deep and on their 3rd drummer, all previous members of the band appear here, as original members Jason Simon and Steve Kille's keen sense of rhythmic and groove filled songwriting that's part classic rock, part '80s metal and '90s grunge is as strong as ever.

A band that haven't deviated from their sound since day one, these 8 songs stay true to their form with exactly no filler.

A debut album that is largely influenced by Dewey’s decade plus stint with Dr. Ralph Stanley & The Clinch Mountain Boys, these 14 tunes are tailor-made for die hard bluegrass fans.

Loaded with harmonies and precise, swift instrumentation, the songs are often autobiographical about Leslie’s upbringing in the mountains in Virginia. While Dewey handles fiddle acrobatics and Leslie brings the bass and the bulk of the vocals, the banjo, guitar and mandolin from the band complete the authentic, rich and extraordinary listen that even delivers an a capella masterpiece with “Black Lung”.

It’s been a fine year for bluegrass sounds, and it would be understating it to say that Under The Mountain is much of the reason why.

Now residing in Los Angeles, the former Brooklynites start this new chapter in their creative career with both guitar and synth heavy versions of robust indie-rock that showcases their varied talents.

Even though it’s a 12 track listen, there’s actually 2 distinct EPs to be found here. Moonlight Baby, the more driving and dreamy installment, brings giant riffs to a spacey affair with overflowing melodies, especially on the glowing title track. This portion ends on the dark, haunting “I’m Coming Home Tonight”, which brings to mind Thom Yorke’s passionate delivery.

Afternoon With Caroline is a more electro-pop affair, where the guitars are set aside while synth takes center stage, and fully embraces dance-rock from a fun, ‘70s angle where R&B and soulful grooves are in abundance.

Some of these tunes- or some variations of them- were reportedly leftover after 2017’s Bloodshot Tokyo LP, and were without a home. Add in some new tunes and an entirely new recording session and you get a look at the seemingly endless possibilities of alt-rock, indie-rock and psyche-rock from one of the more exciting bands that exists today.

The Los Angeles rockers returns with a sophomore album that shifts in direction from the hard rock of their debut to bright moments of ‘70s rock. This isn’t to say there isn’t plenty of guitar crunch and loud moments of energy that are guided by Dorothy Martin’s soaring, strong vocals, but it’s certainly a less straight forward affair this time.

Heavy on blues and psychedelia, this 2nd album offers plenty of arena rock sized tunes full of guitar riffs with an anthemic jam band quality, though softer, almost gospel tunes are also present and leave an indelible mark with heavy attention to rhythm and groove.

It’s difficult not to think of Janis Joplin, Stevie Nicks and Jefferson Airplane here, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with that. A moody and sometimes turbulent album, Dorothy’s take on classic rock is a breath of fresh air in a time of so much computer generated music.

The Toronto artist reinvents herself on a debut album that shifts away from the jazz and chamber sounds of her past as Chloe Charles, and pushes forward into a polished pop affair with plenty of R&B, neo-soul, and even sophisticated and graceful strings.

A listen where Echlo’s expressive, and adaptable vocals are the focal point, her emotional and heartfelt pipes make songs like the piano heavy “Beautifully Cruel” radiant, while tracks like “Heart Of A Man” and “Want It” are closer to today’s version of pop, though Echlo’s shines a bit brighter. Album highlight, “I Can’t Bear To See You Cry”, includes an orchestral backdrop and acoustic playfulness, leaving us with an intimate and touching standout.

Although she may have struggled being heard in her local Toronto scene as a black female among a dominant white boy’s club, here she makes her art very noticeable and memorable. An album that took 2 years to make, it’s very clear that much care, love and turmoil went into this gem.

While the slide guitars and harmonicas offer us Blinn’s country influences, and she occasionally tosses in some soulful, bluesy guitars, the smoldering, rich vocals are what truly make her stand out from the pack and are integral to the addictive choruses and universal appeal here.

An album with enough hooks for pop success but still rugged enough for the alt-country crowd, Blinn possesses the sort of talent that makes for a household name, and Better Than Gold is a giant step in that direction.

With careful attention to ambience and groove, whether the tunes are packed with furious art-rock or calmer vocal harmonies with jazz influences and even some minor R&B soulfulness, there’s an inventiveness to the album that’s often absent in today’s version of indie-rock.

Part alt-rock, part prog-rock and part psyche-rock, this is a highly entertaining and an unusual album that is weird in all the right ways and defies convention in a manner that borders on genius.

Inspiration being derived from the sound of a broken fan in a restaurant bathroom is probably an impetus you're unlikely to hear again, but that's exactly what set the wheels in motion for Meric Long's FAN project.

The music portion is handled largely by a pair of synths his late father left behind, though this isn't Long's standard instrument; you may know him better as the guitarist/vocalist for the long running indie-outfit The Dodos. However, this unusual album allows Long to explore childhood fascinations like video game soundtracks, Prince and Devo.

Often with an ominous electronic post-punk backdrop, this is an adventurous outing with sounds on both sides of the spectrum from nearly industrial to synth-pop. Armed with distorted guitars and complicated melodies, it's an intricate affair where each song feels like a production all its own, from bouts of loud guitars and glowing energy to calm, introspective meandering. Fans of Long’s full time gig will appreciate a couple tunes that basically seem like The Dodos plus synth, but for the most part this an entirely different animal and a captivating one at that.

A darkwave outfit from Texas, this 2nd album from The Fibs embodies all that we adore about The Cure, Joy Division and Bauhaus, and parallel their moodiness, ominous atmosphere and, perhaps most importantly, penchant for dramatic yet playful songwriting.

The album leads with chilling screams, and while it’s far from uplifting music, the listen does tug a bit on shoegaze and surf rock, though buried under brooding, dissonant noise and visceral rhythm that just begs to played late at night.

If you like your music dense, throbbing and with little semblance of mass appeal, make room for The Fibs in your collection.

The sophomore album from the San Francisco outfit births more of their retro pop stylings in a very sophisticated version of indie-rock. Though the album leads with keys, it's not long until horns, tambourines and, most importantly, well controlled guitars overtake the listen.

While there may only be 4 members, there's an impressive density to the well crafted tunes, as each track unfolds with meticulous precision and ultimate lasting power that's timeless, nostalgic and inventive.

Somewhere between dream-pop, psyche-rock and with a hint of Brit-pop, this is a band who probably own many albums by The Velvet Underground and The Beach Boys, and we're all better off for it.

I’m a bit late to the party here, as Scotland’s The Fratellis have been doing great things in the area of garage and alt-rock for well over a decade now. On this 5th album, the trio move in a direction closer to dance-rock, tossing plenty of pop and indie influences into the formula.

Heavy on grooves and with frontman Jon’s falsetto shining brightly, the hooks here never seem to end, and the same can be said about the fun. While the album doesn’t hide behind any cryptic sounds, some experimental Indian ideas on “Advaita Shuffle” and the disco and funk of “The Next Time We Wed” are nice departures from the sugary indie-pop the rest of the album is soaked in.

An album that’s nearly impossible not to enjoy, even if this sort of wide appeal pop isn’t in your interests, The Fratellis are just so good at it, that by the end of the album you’ll be a fan.

After a series of successful EPs, the Tel Aviv trio return with a first album that was fleshed out cautiously and slowly in order to capture their thriving brand of electronica and indie-pop that will appeal to fans of chillwave and trip hop, too.

With 2 voices, plenty of keys and sampling in their arsenal, the sounds here are both art-influenced and experimental, where attention to melody and mood are nothing short of meticulous.

At 18 songs this might seem like a bit much to absorb, but with most of the tracks being under 3 minutes and the vast exploration found within, each tune is like an adventure in itself. While some songs flirt with Middle Eastern ideas, others are more Asian rooted and beat driven, and cinematic, orchestral and downtempo qualities run wild from beginning to end.

These guys appear to be filled with endless ideas, and they lay them down here in unpredictable, impressive ways.

Colorado’s Gerry Spehar is not pleased with the current state of politics, and on this sophomore album he reignites the protest spirit of legends like Woody Guthrie to express his disdain.

Though Spehar uses his guitar and deep vocals as his primary medium, plenty of horns, banjos, fiddles and organs permeate this varied album of folky, country, blues and funk sounds that’s most importantly completed with rich, timeless story telling.

Spehar certainly doesn’t hold his tongue and openly talks of Trump on numerous occasions (as well as Weinstein and O’Reilly), and topics like immigration, religion and sexual assault are all covered with eloquence and careful consideration, too.

Probably not the ideal listen if you sport a MAGA ball cap, Anger Management does a fine job of documenting these turbulent times with warm, cultured poise.

An album that defies all categorization, elements of Krautrock, industrial, and house are part of the equation, with a strong emphasis on ambient atmosphere and futuristic noises.

While some songs are fuzzed out dance-rock, others could soundtrack a sci-fi flick with their robotic sounds and things get even more interesting on the soulful and funky '70s inspired tracks.

While returning fans will likely see this as a logical extension of these 2 ultra creative minds, new ears may require several listens to really understand and absorb the depth of this 5th album.

A Humdrum Star

The Blue Note label has had an impressive year, and this cozy album from the UK trio is another fine example of that greatness. Drawing from both jazz and classical sounds, this outing has GoGo Penguin also diving headfirst into electronica, forging a flourishing offshoot of EDM.

While some tunes are held down by moody piano with a minimalistic approach, others are busy, rich and atmospheric, where complicated percussion and a spacey feeling that suits the Carl Sagan referenced album title draws the listener in with complicated textures.

Ultimately an album built around rhythm, bassist Nick Blacka and drummer Rob Turner put in an astonishing performance of graceful grooves and exciting trip-hop that’s somehow both soothing and mesmerizing.

If you were thinking that a live album for a still relatively young band seems a bit premature, well, then you probably haven’t heard the supergroup that is The Gloaming. Considered masters of Traditional Irish music, in the 2 albums prior to this one they’ve managed to incorporate post-rock, jazz, classical and minimalism into a sound that is completely all their own.

A 6 track outing culled from many days of sold out shows at the National Concert Hall in Dublin over a span of 2 years, this recording captures the essence of their dynamic interplay and gorgeous textures that unfold with the utmost grace and seamless fluidity.

A primarily sparse listen with minimal vocals and no percussion where keys and fiddles are often at center stage, though there’s a small handful of tracks we get an hour of music that weaves in and out of chamber sounds and experimental ideas- with some songs lasting as long as 18 minutes.

This is a sublime experience; while I generally only suggest live albums for longtime fans, the immaculate performances here would be a great introduction.

There appears to be an endless amount of talent in Austin, Texas, and Cheyenne Valley Drive is reinforcing that notion with swampy, old school rock’n’roll from the trio, where 2 of the 3 members are departures from Mofro (JJ Grey), who left to concentrate solely on Greyhounds.

Though the 3 principal members all sing, there’s also plenty of guest vocals on hand from Amy LaVere and Rev. Robert Mortimer among others, and contributions on guitar from Will Sexton and sax from Art Edmasiton. Together, the talent focus on a less produced and spontaneous recording of tunes that Anthony Farrell and Andrew Trube hadn’t recorded yet from their nearly 2 decades playing music together.

A very vintage and soulful excursion that touches heavily on Memphis sounds, Greyhounds use important components of funk and blues to steer their rock’n’roll down avenues that transport us back to the ‘60s and ‘70s.

With much variety present, from the retro keys to Americana guitar solos of “All We Are” to the bouncy and punchy southern bar rock of “No Other Woman”, there’s also plenty of balladry to peruse on this stylish, nostalgic album.

There is some pretty impressive Omaha indie-royalty on this album, including members of The Faint, Bright Eyes and Azure Ray, but the real star here is newcomer Christine Fink, who brings her sturdy and soulful Janis Jopline-esque pipes out of the karaoke bar and into High Up.

While at their core you may find this along the lines of garage rock, Fink’s expressive voice and the occasional nod to blues bring this out of the ‘Saddle Creek sound’ and into a more cultured approach, with plenty of brass and even with a dark folk cover of “Make A Plan To Love Me” (Bright Eyes).

Often a dramatic and emotive album, there’s a lot of power to be found here both musically and lyrically, as this is an album that demands your full attention and certainly warrants it.

Though they formed in San Diego in 2005, Honest Iago (pronounced yah-go) may only be on their second album, but some things are certainly worth the wait. Unfolding like a kaleidoscope of various genres of punk, the quick album touches on Americana, modern rock, and, surprisingly, mild thrash, and they even offer a fun and forceful cover of The Postal Service’s “The District Sleeps Alone Tonight”.

While the first tune finds a rough, anthemic quality somewhere between Against Me! and Lucero, subsequent tracks illustrate a wealth of influences delivered with dual vocals- one gruff, one smooth- with more mid-tempo, exploratory songs that inevitably invoke '90s emo/post-hardcore feelings.

If these guys opened for Hot Water Music back in their heyday, you would have bought an album and a shirt and used both excessively and affectionately.

Though there exists plenty of hints at the early days of hard rock, and even more subtle nods at jazz fusion, much of the listen is raging chord progressions and thick riffage that fans of heavier music will certainly appreciate.

Though there may only be 9 tunes here, nearly half surpass the 5 minute mark, which, when you have the sort of skill present here, will never wear out its welcome.

The moniker of Kieran Smith, who writes about ‘beautiful souls in unforgiving times’, he offers his baritone voice and spare song craft in forthright, inventive ways and draws parallels to greats like Elliott Smith and Tom Waits.

While some tunes, like the single “Painted Horses”, carry a haunting background and strategic keys to help illuminate the desolate atmosphere, others, like the fuller, orchestral “Little Light”, bring breezy strumming and echoes of the beauty achieved by much of the Saddle Creek roster.

Though Smith will say in song that his work is ‘bland and derivative’, he’s selling himself short; this guy has a way with words and his singer/songwriter delivery is poetic and moving, even though his vocal drawl does take a couple of spins to acclimate to (imagine playing a 45 RPM at 33 RPM).

If you’re enamored with the indie-folk genre, you simply must hear this charming, unfeigned album.

A highly emotive and moody listen, frontman Rollo Doherty nearly sounds like he’s going to strain himself with impassioned singing, while band use space and ambiance to their advantage, relying on slow burning melodies and crisp percussion to fuel their rhythmic version of alt-rock.

It’s a dreamy affair, sounding more mature than the age of these youngsters and shows remarkable potential for a band who are quickly becoming very important in their home country.

The esteemed saxophonist, who cut his teeth in bands like Liberation Prophecy and more recently did fine work on music by Rachel Grimes, returns with a 2nd album of jazz sounds and an all star cast supporting him.

While Duncan handles alto sax duties, JD Allen holds down tenor sax, and both get ample time to showcase their respective talents, Somewhat surprisingly, the album leads with the kick drum and ominous tone of a post-punk tune, before moving directly into complicated and seemingly precipitous areas of lush and dynamic avant-garde jazz.

Entirely instrumental, each tune does have a story- from odes to his ancestors to hometown hero Muhammad Ali- and though the album was recorded in one session it never feels rushed as the players work off each other’s strengths, finding groove and melody in sweet places like “It’s Alright To Dream”, or the ragtime-esque “Kentucky Mud Shuffle”.

Duncan and company take plenty of risks here and succeed in a fruitful endeavor of beaming, creative and organic storytelling that’s both rich and fascinating.

Country music comes in many forms these days, but few are as exciting, unpredictable and ragged as South Carolina’s James Scott Bullard and his 6th album.

You won’t find any tunes about dogs or trucks here. Instead, Bullard provides music that could soundtrack a knife fight in a dusty parking lot or a brawl between rival biker gangs.

Armed with a sage-like voice, Bullard’s honky tonk has a fierce southern rock element to it, and the riff driven and loud variations of gospel and blues that reside on the darker side of the equation are nothing short of irresistible, even if it makes you examine all your own flaws.

A former over indulger of substances, these days Bullard channels all that energy into his gripping brand of outlaw country, and we’re all better off for it.

Together with his band Burning Bridge, violinist Hwang delivers 5 lengthy, continuous tracks of his long standing, improvisational jazz in a cinematic and experimental collision with traditional Chinese sounds

The theme of the album revolves around the trauma of war, and the music reflects that with turbulent percussion, orchestral ebbs and plenty of eclectic, sometimes jarring rhythms. The use of eastern instruments like the pipa and erhu help give the album an even more unique angle, though one could argue that Hwang’s vision regardless of any specific noisemaker would be unorthodox.

Though the record opens with the skittering sounds and shuffling harmonies of “Breath Within A Bomb”, later on heavy grooves on tracks like “Evolution” brings us blues properties, while the album closer, “Declarations”, yields an unparalleled and meticulous interplay between the instruments.

Hwang continues to challenge people’s preconceptions of how jazz is supposed to unfold, as he fuses east and west ideas into a fascinating and intense listen, essentially rewriting world fusion sounds in his own light.

The sophomore album from Van West brings in some serious players, including members of Jackson Brown, Shooter Jennings, Jakob Dylan and others. However, it’s the Portland, Maine songstress who shines the brightest here.

Largely built around the gentle acoustic strumming from Van West, there’s also keys, pedal steel, accordions and dobro that help flesh out the country, folk, Americana and swing music. West’s unwavering and flawless vocals are easily the highlight, though, and the genuine and sweet delivery even fits well with the jazzy title track.

Even though she does take on some heavy topics, including the death of Freddie Gray, the musicianship and singing are so positively uplifting, that I couldn’t think of a better antidote to a bad day than this charming feel good record.

Now here’s something really unique. Toronto’s Dutcher pairs his operatic vocals with a 100+ year old recording of a speech given by Wolastoqiyik ancestor Jim Paul. Add plenty of strings and horns to the equation, and you get a vintage and contemporary listen where archived sounds meet classical and pop ideas.

Extremely emotive and tense, all the songs are sung in a Canadian language that only a few hundred people still speak. While some tunes, like “Mehcinut”, are packed with fluttering keys and building moments of cathartic release, there are plenty of electronic flourishes a la Radiohead, and sweeping, orchestral supplementing that powers the soaring mood present.

Dutcher won the Polaris Music Prize for this debut album and it’s not hard to see why; this is a monumental project and his neo-classical, tribal and cinematic qualities unfold with an unparalleled amount of competence as Dutcher acts like a musical anthropologist, unearthing forgotten gems and reshaping them with an expertise that seems far greater than his 27 years of age.

A drummer, producer and educator, Jim Roberts took years to complete this project that was inspired by peace activists, and though it’s heavy on percussion, there’s plenty of highly eclectic sounds to this very curious album that explores themes of nature and time.

A listen where each tune is an adventure in itself, while plenty are busy with multiple voices and an arsenal of instruments, songs like “Myth and Truth” are just Roberts and a synthesizer, and “Creators” brings backing vocals against a balafon for a sparse, quirky affair. Of the fuller songs, “Soul Power” is just that, and with funk and blues, too, and “Drum Language” is nearly 7 minutes of Roberts schooling us on different percussive noise makers.

Kind of prog-rock, sort of world music and entirely unusual, Roberts carves out a path entirely his own here, even offering a fantastic version of Iggy Pop’s “The Passenger” where he nearly doubles the duration of the original with plenty of cultural experimentalism.

An enlightening effort with much complexity to absorb, it’s not an exhausting listen, but requires a willingness to absorb the abnormal.

Craigie is an unusual one in that he invites comedy bits into his songs, as well as between the songs, and it’s been working well as the now Portland resident has made quite a name for himself with a handful of albums as well as touring alongside Jack Johnson.

This 2nd live album, recorded in December 2017 at the Mississippi Studios and The Doug Fir (both in Portland), has Craigie handling all guitar, vocal and harmonica duties, though a big chunk of the album is storytelling sans music, which is an enormous part of his appeal.

Self-described as ‘humorous storytelling, serious folk’ Craigie is both in spades. Musically, he’s an old soul, singing with a voice that seems well beyond his years (he’s not even 40 yet) and playing a style not unlike Arlo Guthrie or Bob Dylan. Lyrically and comedically, he is a millenial with quick wit, well timed delivery and a very matter-of-fact Mitch Hedberg feel that’s both lighthearted and extremely clever.

Stories about Burning Man, Leviticus and The President will have you hanging on every word while laughing out loud, and even though Craigie jokes that he only knows 3 chords, the songs are memorable, topical and fun with short bursts of harmonica and folky guitar playing.

A very rare talent, it’s difficult to tell if Craigie is a better musician or narrator, but the fact that he is so accomplished at both makes him one of the most exciting artists today. If you haven’t heard Craigie yet, don’t waste another minute; his work will immeasurably enrich your life.

The living legend returns with a 23rd studio album that arrives after his longest break from recorded music since his inception in 1974. The reason for the inactivity? Well, perhaps for the first time ever, the songs just weren’t coming to Hiatt like they had in the past.

Fortunately, the tunes did arrive, and when they did, they came in a reinvigorated and raw form. From breezy piano rockers to stripped back and solemn moments, Hiatt covers a lot of ground on this very thoughtful record. Album highlights include the sturdy rhythm, vocal acrobatics and exceptional, dark guitar work on “All The Way To The River”, and “Outrunning My Soul” has Hiatt flirting with power-pop in a playful and effective fashion.

Recorded mostly live at a farmhouse, the back to basics approach highlights Hiatt’s powerful pipes and gritty guitar playing, and his roots, country and blues hybrid sounds are in top form. At 66 years old now, Hiatt’s career is just over 4 decades old , and as evidenced by this strong collection, he’s only getting better.

An album that takes inspiration from the early ‘80s, and largely The Blue Nile, The Style Council and Prefab Sprout, the Nebraskan born Rouse also tips his hat to Roxy Music’s Avalon and Leonard Cohen on this playful album where he sets down his acoustic guitar and picks up a synthesizer instead.

An extremely smooth and often light and airy departure for Rouse, horns and backing female vocals punctuate the breezy lounge tunes that occasionally have a mod feel (“Hugs And Kisses”) or even flirt with dream rock, particularly on the title track.

While it would be tough to argue that Rouse is as proficient here as he was on his 11 prior albums of folk/roots/Americana, we certainly can’t fault the guy for trying out a new creative path after two decades of essentially coloring inside the lines.

Probably not an ideal place to start for the first time listener, but certainly worth a peek for the unwavering fan, especially for the strong lyrical content.

A man of many talents, in addition to being a musician Diaz was initially an actor, though his vocal and songwriting talent is quickly making him a prominent figure in the area of Puerto Rican salsa.

While Diaz brings in strong percussion and plenty of brass work here, it’s his sturdy vocals that carry the album through plenty of dance songs as well as Puerto Rican folk sounds. A very busy listen, there’s a wealth of contributors on hand, and the top notch production allows each instrument to shine in an effort that glows with unbridled energy.

It’s no surprise that Diaz saw a Latin Grammy nomination for Fase Dos; it’s an authentic and skilled body of work that retains the timeless spirit of an all too often overlooked genre.

In his 4 decades of playing music, Gerstin has been involved in just about every genre of sounds as both composer and bandleader. Following the success of 2017’s The One That Makes You Happy, this installment of World Jazz arrangements draws inspiration from the music of Cuba, The Balkans, Martinique, Columbia and The United States.

Though Gerstin handles percussion here, his band bring in the usual suspects plus clarinets and trumpets, and contributions from additional players on flute, violin, trombone, accordion and saxophone adds greatly to the appeal and uniqueness of the album.

Together the ensemble sound right at home with jazz sounds from many continents, as the music moves from graceful balladry to bright dance sounds and a blues track with the Colombian based “Cumbia Sin Cambio” further punctuates the diversity. There’s plenty of emphasis on harmonies, especially within the clarinet and horns, which are particularly expressive, and Gerstin’s eclectic use of percussion really holds the album together.

Entirely instrumental, it’s a listen with immense culture and boundless talent with a multifaceted approach to rhythm and groove that makes the listen immediately fascinating.

Hawaii’s Kings Of Spade have had some tough times, but they’ve harnassed those experiences into a fiesty, energetic debut album. Fronted by KC, whose powerful and soul stirring pipes guide us through playful rompers and bristling energy, this isn’t your typical blues record by any stretch of the imagination.

Often channeling the essence of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin, tales of queer love are relayed with youthful spirit while heavy guitar work with the occasional solo and thundering, giant sounds that could fill arenas envelope us. However, “Mess Of Me”, a maudlin moment, turns the volume down and really allows KC’s sublime pipes to shine while the emotive guitars emit warmth and soulfulness.

Kings Of Spade reside in a unique spot; fans of hard rock will certainly appreciate their intensity, and fans of punk will appreciate their rebellious nature. Additionally, the dance friendly rhythm and grooves present could certainly soundtrack any late night club visit, too.

This is a band destined for very great things; they’ve got the songs, the musicianship, and that voice… wow.

The first album from the Canadian duo, Colin Kutchyera and La+ch (Coleman Hell. Sideways Collective) have both cut their teeth with plenty of esteemed work in the area of experimental and electronic sounds, and their looping and organic expertise pay off in spades on this debut.

The pair have an affinity for sturdy pop melodies, while the soaring falsetto vocals resonate with enough strength for the FM dial as they weave in and out of complicated patterns and generally busy sounds with ease.

Amazingly, the entire album was recorded in just 2 weekends- 4 tunes each weekend. Kutchyera and La+ch were actually in a post-punk band years ago (Adverse Vital Signs), which explains the nearly innate sounding chemistry between them, and though they both live entirely different lives today (one a full time musician, one a nine-to-fiver and full time dad), this project fuses their respective talents into a glowing entity.

The first release from this NYC synth-pop songstress, L’FREAQ (real name Lea Cappelli) uses dark textures and inspiration from seminal artists like Portishead to put her poetry to sounds- some of which are seductive, and all of which are writhing with emotion.

Lyrically outspoken and open minded, the songs all hold special meaning to Cappelli, and the sensual delivery is both dreamy and powerful. While songs like “Moonlight” poke and prod with hazy, chilling pop,”New Skin” brings an anthemic quality that would light up any dance floor.

Apparently, L’FREAQ has been turning heads in the New York City scene and it’s easy to see why; Weird Awakenings crams a lot of atmosphere, sounds and influences into these 5 songs, and delivers them with style, soul and precison.

Self-described as 'smart-pop', multi-instrumentalists Kaitlin Deavy and Alejandro Zarazua decorate their straight forward melodies with complicated music on this first EP. Though the quick listen starts out with busy, synth heavy indie-rock where the sounds are as large as the memorableness, it doesn't take long until “In Circles”, which sounds nothing like Sunny Day Real Estate, brings the duo into playful folk-pop. The EP ends with the maudlin moment, where both sing a dreamy, reflective, sparse conclusion.

This Vancouver pair are really onto something here; a (hopefully) forthcoming album should be on everyone's radar, especially if you still revisit The Postal Service LP.

Culling from pop, blues, R&B and jazz, Fischer provides a calm and fluid listen that’s dreamy, moody and usually danceable. Often with a strong beat and fluttering keys, her soft and tuneful vocals guide us through a very mature and heartwarming record that moves and glides with grand sophistication.

An ideal companion if you’re looking to bask in the glory of love or if you just want to mull things over, the beauty and emotion present here are both universal and timeless.

Together with The Flatbellys, Lindsay Lou has been busy making soul stirring songs across 4 albums now. An extremely cathartic outing, this new effort comes after an emotional time for the outfit, with some shifts in line up changes and them formally dropping The Flatbellys name.

Still, though, it’s the sounds were used to from Lou and company, as her humble and rich vocals are supported by Americana, bluegrass and even jazz sensibilities. A more electric outing this time, it’s still sweet with timeless melody, where playful mountain music like the harmonicas and lush sounds of “The River That I Knew” and soothing vocal harmonizing with warm strumming on standout track like “The Voice” possess great lasting power.

Now residing in Nashville, the former Michigan residents are certainly letting the long lineage of their new hometown influence their work, and it’s evident in the impressive beauty and mixed bag of thriving song craft on Southland.

Formerly a solo bedroom project, these days Austin’s Linen Closet are a full band and their experimental pop ideas are fleshed out here in unusual and alluring ways.

Spearheaded by Adam Hilton, now he’s in the company of members of She Sir, New Arrows, and Hovvdy, and their not so subtle orchestral angle and sounds span from sparse- nearly still- beauty to calculated, loud bouts of sonic melody.

With plenty of brass, harp, synth and piano punctuating the arrangements, it’s a theatric and often dramatic effort, with very close attention to detail and texture. While songs like “Norton Anthologies And Love” are bare, folky-pop with fuller moments of cinematic horns, “snugglesong” is a breathy chamber pop highlight of twinkling beauty. Even more interesting is the 7 minute closer “Top Of My Head” that builds into giant walls of noise and post-punk aberration.

There’s certainly no shortage of atypical indie-bands today, with varying degrees of success. Linen Closet’s approach and delivery is just right though, the perfect balance of universal appeal and embraceable weirdness.

If you’ve been milling around the East Coast Americana scene lately, you might be familiar with New Jersey’s Lowlight. Now several years into their craft, the outfit expand their horizons with synth sounds to their cautious indie-rock formula on this new EP.

Still indebted more to roots rock and folk, while there’s synth-pop to be found across these 20 minutes, it’s primarily a languid and lush outing with well thought out stories that occasionally become more tense, such as the ebullient outpouring of “Can’t Stop Now”.

Although it’s just 4 tracks, the band exit on the daring 10 minutes of “Birdman’s Last Ride”, where experimental and psyche ideas surround soft, minimal vocals and organ melodies with world music percussion that really puts an exclamation point on the overt beauty of the listen.

It’s no surprise that Chrissie Hynde handpicked Lowlight to support The Pretenders on tour; there’s a very enthralling darkness here that’s both mysterious and calming, as well as a classic approach that could fall into any decade from the ‘60s on.

Also, if you’re wondering about the EP title (as I was), they know and it was done on purpose.

The 3rd album from the Melbourne singer/songwriter showcases her varied talents from sparse to full, as she explores universal topics of love, sadness, relationships, as well as drawing on experiences from her many years touring.

Largely in the area of folk music, Wise has a lovely, warm voice and is no stranger to the ukulele, while her band bring in accordions, banjos and keys to the emotive and almost therapeutic album. Well versed in both Appalachian and Celtic ideas, Wise also mirrors her influences with the timeless appeal of legends like Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan.

Two covers are included, one a traditional Appalachian folk song, and the other a Gillian Welch tune (“Hard Time”), and Wise and company rework it in their own intimate fashion, with the chamber and pop elements found elsewhere across this very gentle and nimble listen.

Machine is the duo of Madeline Mahrie and Peter Thomas, and the Los Angeles pair have a penchant for dramatic and dark pop songs largely fueled by keys and percussion.

Though the album leads with the finger snapping and nearly acapella “Mad Tom Of Bedlam”, from then on the listen shifts towards louder tunes of alt-rock, art-pop and even blues influenced sounds. Additions of strings and horns complement the intriguing listen, and, most importantly, Mahrie’s thundering and soulful vocals never recede and alone are worth the price of admission.

A debut that’s visceral enough for the post-punk crowd but also with a wide appeal designed for stadium pop, fans of both Siouxsie Sioux and Lady Gaga will find interest here.

Doom punk from Warsaw, Poland that’s spearheaded by Adam Sokol, his reflections on nature, God, and society are all wrapped in writhing and raw dissonant, metallic sounds that, though being intimidating, express a strong desire to communicate.

Very surprisingly, considering the abrasiveness here, accordions, clarinets, and pinquillos all make appearances, as does some melodic female vocals, as the ensemble bring Eastern influences into this highly unusual mix of droning, stoner, aberrant sounds.

Overwhelmingly, though, it’s raw, noisey, very bass focused and takes from industrial moments to produce a very atypical version of punk. If Nausea had never broken up and became very experimental, it might sound like this.

If you’re a fan of Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, Britain’s Mark Kingswood should be on your radar, if he isn’t already. An accomplished musician, producer, songwriter and vocalist, Kingswood’s passion for big band, jazz and pop sounds coalesce here on 11 originals and 2 very interesting covers.

A rich, orchestral and powerful listen with plenty of balladry, Kingswood’s pipes are nothing short of stunning, and the music follows suit with bright melodies and eclectic flourishes of grace and sophistication. Of the covers, “Losing My Religion” is reworked in an orchestral fashion with a slighly haunting feel and plenty of mature keys and “One More Try” brings horns into the calm interpretation of George Michael’s best tune.

As far as debut albums go, this is a promising first swing of great elegance and timeless songcraft.

One of the pioneers of the neo-soul sound and a 10 time Grammy nominee, Ndegeocello has done many things in her lengthy career, but this 12th album is a first as it’s covers of (mostly) well known ‘80s and ‘90s hits.

The selections are somewhat surprising, including Janet Jackson, TLC, Sade and Tina Turner as far as big names, though smaller, underappreciated artists like Force MDs, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and Al. B Sure! are also reworked as well. An artist who is no stranger to covers (she penned a tribute album to Nina Simone in 2012), Ndegeocello rebuilds these classics in her own vision of lush, layered, genre skipping soulfulness that often leaves only the lyrics the same compared to the originals.

Highlights include the slowed down, acoustic version of the ‘90s smash “Waterfalls” and Prince’s “Sometimes It Snows In April”, which is reinvented in a ‘90s rock sort of way with hushed vocals and chilling guitars. Much like all of Ndegeocello’s work, every track here is a gem, and even if you weren’t keen on the original, there’s much to embrace here.

Mirah's 6th solo album finds the powerful songstress returning to her early, atypical recording process while bringing on Deerhoof's Greg Saunier to help flesh out the thoughtful tunes. Always a composer with vivid wordplay, Mirah explores some dense themes here, taking on topics like illness and death to those close to her, and of course today's political climate is touched on in her eloquent fashion.

As graceful and mature as all of her work, her spellbinding vocals largely stay hushed here, with waves of synth, stirring moments of sparse acoustic work and even louder, nearly anthemic pop also being in her arsenal. While the music is often dreamy, classical influenced, and sophisticated, some brushes with busier moments help round out the impressive effort.

Undeniably a party album, the grooves and melodies that run wild here, added to the innovative approach, will leave you unable to be stagnant and further exemplify why Mndsgn is among the best in the game.

Smiley is in great company here, working alongside members of tUnE-yArDs, Rising Appalachia, Band of Joy and Solas, and together the ensemble deliver the best parts of indie, Americana and folk.

While Smiley handles accordion, banjo, piano, some strings and, most importantly, stunning vocal work, the long list of help on hand offer percussion, vocals, strings and guitars, which might lead one to think it’s a busy affair. However, much of the album is sparse, and fueled by powerful songs, layers of vocals, and unique body percussion that were inspired by Smiley’s trip to the Ukraine that only reinforced the strength of her songcraft.

While world music might be an appropriate tag present, Smiley is also well versed in diverse balladry and Eastern European influences, all of which unfold here with much sophistication. An album with a deep desire to communicate, Unzip The Horizon is a journey of timeless, poetic beauty.

The Bay Area has historically never been short on creative fusions of various genres, and the six members of Monophonics carry on that time honored tradition with their soul, rock and funk concoction.

Though all 6 tunes here are covers it’s unlikely you’ve heard them before, and even if you have, Monophonics reinvents them in a powerful, psyche-influenced fashion that covers a lot of ground in a short amount of time.

From breezy and hazy to soulful balladry and even some romping blues fun near the end, the band step back into time here, even using vintage equipment and a primitive recording process to really capture the essence of these classics that just beg to be heard live.

A perfect way to satiate the appetite for fans betweens full albums, if you haven’t familiarized yourself with Monophonics yet, this would be an ideal place to start.

It's been pretty close to a decade since we've heard anything new from the long running San Diego garage rock outfit The Morlocks. Currently on the 2nd version of the band with frontman Leighton Koizumi still at the helm, nowadays they call Germany home and are armed with members of Fuzztones and Link Wray.

Though this might be The Morlocks with the most esteemed musicians on board, the songs are still packed with gritty, reckless '60s and '70s energy, often sounding more like a retro band from Detroit. While the rowdy flair of icons like The Stooges and New York Dolls are easy to spot, varied moments of acoustic guitar and even cinematic psychobilly reminiscent of The Cramps with harmonica solos are also present, making this a highlight in a long, sometimes fractured but always punk inspired career.

An album dedicated to victims of police brutality (especially Tamir Rice and Eric Garner), the Cleveland outfit bring their Afrofuturist soul sounds and hip-hop ideas to this very relevant sophomore effort.

Armed with multiple voices, brass and synth, the record opens with “Anti Anthem”, where the large horn presence and vocal harmonies foreshadow the soulful energy of the remainder of the album. While influences from jazz, funk and R&B are present, there’s understandably a dark and often somber undertone to the entire listen, and even upbeat tunes like “Destiny Skies” still paint a picture of a fractured society.

A project that is much bigger than just the music present, while it may be easy to enjoy The Garner Poems for it’s gritty, DIY, lo-fi experimentalism and flourishing grooves and melodies, let’s not forget that above everything is a desire to communicate and strive for a better world.

There’s little reason to try and figure out what Sluff means. Instead, let’s concentrate on the Seattle trio’s first album, which actually might not be any easier to figure out than the album title.

While the 3 youngsters here carry on the grand tradition of powerful rock from their home city, pinpointing that exact sort of rock is no easy task. Sure, they may be a garage band at their core, but Naked Giants are no strangers to alt-rock fuzz, surf guitar rockers, and reckless psyche-rock influences.

Ultimately a retro party album that rarely stays in one place, even grunge and punk fans should be able to agree on the unpredictable and irrepressible energy here that’s both raw and technical and even brazen enough to toss in a 7 minute acoustic ballad, too.

It’s been a remarkable year for the New West label, and this album is a big reason why.

Though this is the first album from the Athens, Georgia outfit, these 7 songs unfold like work from seasoned vets (members of Reptar and Semicircle also reside here), where indie-rock and alt-country twang meet in the middle. Front woman Emily Braden, who is the impetus behind the affair, has an expressive voice made for lush sounds, and the songs complement her with rich textures that vary from haunting to dreamy and with the occasional driving rock tune.

Lyrically, it's just as meticulous as the music, with a reflective, brooding quality that’s as honest as it is terse, while a powerful and aching aspect exists whether the songs are stripped back or stacked with melodic noise.

The impressive effort ends on one of the most adventurous tunes, “Wring Me Out”, where 6 minutes of psyche-influenced haze illustrate a sprawling, yet tightly knit collision of sweet fury. A great first effort with much potential here.

Long before he was the lead guitarist for the almighty Wilco, Nels Cline was playing jazz, often times with his twin brother, Alex. This debut project as The Nels Cline 4 brings guitarist Julian Lage (who Cline has already worked with), acoustic bassist Scott Colley and Tom Rainey behind the drum kit for a listen that sheds vocals and electronics but adds an entirely new level of dexterity to Cline’s extensive body of work.

With 8 tunes present (1 being a Carla Bley cover), the 4 dance around each other’s instruments in an exceptional display of intricate and busy rhythm that’s often cinematic in quality and highly stylish. Though “Furtive” opens up the album with dissonant and skittering melodic jazz, later tracks like “As Close As That” are tinged with melancholy and emit warm balladry.

Though frantic moments often appear to hint at derailment, the precise skill here keeps the listener hanging on every guitar lick, every ebb into gentle strumming and every avant-garde twist into the unknown.

Cline has certainly earned his spot on Rolling Stone’s list of ‘100 Greatest Guitarists’, and for a guy who has seemingly done everything there is to do in the world of music, he’s found himself another new spot to reside with Currents, Constellations.

A sister act, Monika and Karen Walker take an unusual route with their indie-rock, where New Age influences and a wide barrage of styles help birth their ‘sci-fi opera’ sound.

An album where no 2 songs run the same course, the duo are no strangers to folk-rock on “America”, while the Arabic undertones of the hypnotic “The Skinny” breed another level of diversity. “The Heat”, on the other hand, is glorious pop with soulful hip-hop, and other surprises include the blurry, experimental, ambient moments like “Alaska” and “Kingdom” that certainly give the record a mysterious angle,

Though there’s little on the side of conventional to be found here, electro-pop like “The Ruse” makes the affair a bit more, well, normal, though it’s fleeting, as the tunes surrounding it bring additional unexpectedness.

The sisters are really onto something here. They certainly take the high road with their thoughtful wordplay, and the compositions leave the listener puzzled in all the best ways, eager to hear more.

An 8 piece outfit from Boston who borrow sounds from Southern Italy and the surrounding countries, Newpoli birth what they call ‘Mediterranean Pulse’, though it more closely resembles a very cultured version of folk-rock with both traditional and original compositions.

At over an hour, there’s much to get lost in here, from Greek and Turkish sounds to Spanish flair and an overall global jam band feel that twists and turns with authentic and varied ideas. Vocalists Carmen Marsico and Angela Rossi provide rich, soulful and agile singing to the album, and it mixes well with the assembly of atypical instruments that produce dramatic and often potent sounds that Westerners could benefit from hearing more of.

Lyrically, the band are on top of current political issues, specifically immigration, as these songs do address migrants moving to safer areas, and, impressively, the packaging even contains English translations for clearer communication.

A perfect example of how powerful world music can be, Mediterraneo is a must for all who appreciate diversity.

A renaissance man and former Thrasher Magazine photographer from the Los Angeles area, Nik Freitas recorded and pretty much played everything on this 7th album. Some of us have already heard Freitas from his time in Conor Oberst's Mystic Valley Band, but here we're going to explore a whole new dimension of his varied talents.

An extremely daring version of folk with vivid displays of pop and very potent, relevant wordplay about the status quo (songs like “What A Mess” are an indication of where he's coming from politically), whether he's forcefully strumming an acoustic guitar or building lush atmospheres with pianos and horns, Freitas, along with backing vocals from members of Azure Ray and Springtime Carnivore, paint a colorful and all consuming canvas of lovely, warm, timeless sounds.

Though the first couple tracks produce mild interest, by the end you'll be mulling over 'record of the year' positioning.

At over a half century old now, The Oak Ridge Boys have refined and tweaked their timeless approach to a proven formula, and here, with producer Dave Cobb, the legends focus on gospel sounds.

Recorded with very few overdubs, the quartet harmonize in a way that only they can, as it’s a listen that points back to AM radio in the ‘50s. While Cobb handles guitar and Mike Webb and Chris Powell take on keys and percussion respectively, it’s the sturdy voices that carry the album, with careful selections like “Pray To Jesus” and “There Will Be Light” reinforcing the religious themes present.

A band that have released over 70 albums since the ‘50s, it’s quite amazing they’re still coming up with new ideas while many in their position would just sit back and release Greatest Hits collections. Though they haven’t had any commercial success in many years, their fans will certainly appreciate this rich, soulful and daring listen.

If you’re a fan of garage rock and psychedelic sounds from the ‘60s and ‘70s, then New England’s Oberon Rose and their sophomore album will sate your vintage rock appetite.

Spearheaded by Tommy Oberon, who writes the music, and Rebecca Rose, who pens the lyrics but doesn’t sing or even play on the album, the pair are influenced by the British Invasion and their retro sounds run parallel to all the greats from that era.

While songs like the upbeat and jangly “No Stranger” gives us the best moments of Tom Petty, “A Place In The Sun” sounds right at home alongside today’s current indie-folk scene and even brings some fun synth lines.

The trio are at their best, though, when they emit punchy pop-rock that’s kind of psyche-rock, sort of classic rock and entirely melodic, guitar driven nostalgia, like the lively “Drawn And Quartered”, which somehow invites sounds from both The Byrds and current alt-rock with fantastic results.

Although you might say this isn’t an extremely original listen, I’d say it’s so well written and executed that I’m not concerned with striking new ground. As a reference point, think of The Beatles if they grew up on The Kinks and the Yep Roc Records roster.

The Parlor is the husband and wife duo of Jen O’Conner and Eric Krans, who as multi-instrumentalists and producers/songwriters birth some very interesting art-pop on this 3rd album.

An extremely personal effort, the pair plunge into orchestral synth and heavy sampling, creating a highly interesting mix of synth-folk and chamber-pop that’s spacey, dense and uniquely exploratory.

Though tunes like “Lies” might be dreamy, cosmic balladry, much of the album is upbeat and busy, with constantly shifting textures and unpredictable sonic noises that fall somewhere between trance, indie, psyche and ambient. Overall very dark, it’s also very intimate and rich with texturing that will abruptly break from post-punk throbbing to sweet, acoustic melody.

The impetus for great art can, unfortunately, often be serious tragedy, and in this case the duo channeled the heartbreak of their 2nd miscarriage into a hypnotic, riveting and powerful experience.

A national treasure in his home country, Australia’s Paul Kelly has racked up 14 ARIA Awards and 51 nominations across his astonishing 2 dozen albums. Nature has the troubadour manipulating his songwriting process that brings esteemed poetry to music; included are selections from Sylvia Plath, Walt Whitman, Dylan Thomas, Gerard Manley Hopkins and Phillip Larkin.

With the theme of nature present, it’s an enlightening and highly literate affair with several of Kelly’s own poems included, too. Musically, Kelly is an expert in cautious, well thought out rock, where guitar melodies- both acoustic and electric- flow in abundance and plenty of remnants of folk sounds exist while his commanding voice guides us through mysterious avenues. Largely a hushed affair, Kelly does have plenty of female voices helping out, including his daughters, which punctuates the quiet beauty present here.

Nature landed at #1 on the Australian charts and it’s not difficult to see why. It’s simply universal, timeless and well constructed songs that are hard to forget and easy to enjoy.

If you’re expecting another roots rock album from Paul Thorn, get ready for a surprise. Instead, the former professional boxer turned musician dives right into gospel with help from Blind Boys of Alabama, The McCrary Sisters, Bonnie Bishop and the always splendid The Preservation Hall Jazz Horns.

Largely driven by the organ, the horns, pianos and Thorn’s deft guitar all play supporting roles against his gravely vocals, as the proficient ensemble walk along blues, soul and country stylings with relative ease. The best moment, though, is the cover of The O’Jay’s “Love Train”, where the classic tune is reinvented in a slower, lush and extremely lovely fashion.

A genre that Thorn was exposed to at a young age, he even sang in his father’s church in Mississippi and seems quite comfortable here. He’s released a dozen albums in the last 2 decades, and this one is right at the top and worth picking up even if you’re not a churchgoer.

Houston's Mandy Kim Clinton has a knack for dreamy indie sounds on this debut EP, where lush atmosphere and bedroom pop ideas unfold in charming, irresistible ways. A brief listen that makes full use of her guitar skills, Clinton mixes beats, clapping, and plenty of '80s nods with strategic synth for effect.

Though the first few songs are intimate and restrained with a touch of R&B influence, when we arrive at “Milk & Moon” we get a taste of warm, powerful indie-pop that could and should easily turn heads. Very impressive that Clinton wrote, recorded and produced everything here, too.

Not too many people will put out their debut album in their 50’s, and even fewer do so after leaving the world of horse racing, but that’s exactly what New York City resident Peter Kleinhans has done here.

One could argue, though, releasing music late in life gives Kleinhans a very mature perspective on many of the problems facing us today, as he covers political, economic and societal hardship with graceful and poetic insight.

Musically, it’s a straight forward listen of folk-influenced soft rock, where the crystal clear pipes from Kleinhans are backed by flowing guitars and rhythm, and the welcomed, subtle nods to jazz, country and blues make the soothing listen even more enjoyable.

Another noteworthy point here- and one that’s absent in today’s digital world- is the detailed packaging with a gatefold 6 panel CD, colorful artwork and decent size booklet attached.

Now a three-piece, though the progressive Tampa outfit lost co-founder and vocalist Sasha Cheine, they’re now equipped with Alexa Toro (of the Flow Sisters), who adds a new dimension to the Phantom Phunk sound with her multifaceted skills. Then toss in local hip-hop artist Cloud Master Price, who contributes plenty to this very atypical EP, and we have a reinvented Phantom Phunk.

An extremely varied 5 tracks, the trio are somewhere between alt-rock, modern pop and hip-hop, though it’s never really clear where they reside, which is a large part of the appeal here.

While the quick listens lead with the alt-pop of “Mediphorical”, “Every Where You Go” moves straight into hazy pop-rock and hip-hop. Things then get real interesting with the chunky bass lines and ‘90s rock feel of “No Hard Feelings”, which brings to mind stars like Red Hot Chili Peppers and No Doubt.

The remaining two tracks keep up the strong quality with the charged and driving “Something Certain People Say”, and the bursting “Cheap Thrills” that brings all the influences of the tracks before it into an explosion of unbridled energy.

If you’re new to Phantom Phunk, this is a great starting point. If you’re already a fan you’ve no doubt played it repeatedly and absorbed every addictive moment.

New York City’s Katie Vincent is an actress, writer and producer, but here we’re talking about her work as a musician as she handles nearly all the music and lyrics on this soundtrack.

Though the album leads with a somewhat frightening dialogue (Pickings is a crime flick), it quickly moves into Vincent’s acoustic guitar and booming yet gritty voice. Album highlights include the vocal harmonizing of “Blame It (On The Rain)” and the extremely lovely and ebullient “Trouble Is”, where an ominous backdrop adds to the lasting power of the tune.

The sole track that isn’t performed by Vincent, “Man Of Constant Sorrow”, is handled by Bill Turner and sounds live. Though it’s nowhere near a patch on the greatness of Ralph Stanley, it’s a fine effort and classic tune that flows well with Vincent’s dark country and folk sounds.

A primarily sparse but captivating listen, we can now add singer/songwriter to the long list of skills that Katie Vincent excels at.

These Italian alt-rockers have already impressed plenty of ears while opening up for Interpol, and on this debut album they really show us what they’re capable of with massive amounts of muscular synth work and some ambient and funky moments in their mammoth sized sounds.

An instantly kinetic album, opening tune “Loner Vs. Lover” is a synth-rock explosion though it’s followed by the light and spacey instrumental “P.A.I.N.T.”. “Eternal Ride Of A Heartful Mind” takes a turn into a more restrained yet powerful avenue, while the prominent bass lines of “Sublunary” are very ‘90s alt-rock influenced.

Later in the listen electro-pop moments like “Dusty Shelves” illustrate a very modern approach and some piano balladry on the intro to “Mount Bonnell” is an unexpected but welcomed deviation from the booming intensity of the rest of the album..

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if Piqued Jacks were a household name this time next year. There’s clearly an immense talent present, and the band are tapping into plenty of well received genres, all of which are executed with precision and ultimate lasting power.

A Chicago six piece with a couple strong EP releases already under their belt, this first album showcases their psyche-rock and pop hook affinity, with the perfect balance between tuneful and heavy. Often times bringing us back to the early days of grunge, there's plenty of sludgy, thundering moments, but the modern pop influence is often present with warm, glowing melodies.

Though the album leads with soft, dreamy, nature sounds, it doesn't take long until remnants of Black Sabbath, '70s garage rock and experimental variations of classic, prog and indie-rock envelop us in unpredictable and alluring ways. In the area of neo-psyche outfits, these guys are near the top.
