Listen to I’m Gonna Love You No Matter What

The singer-songwriter Todd Mack returns with an 8th album, where an excellent backing band help illuminate his lush, Americana vision.

The warm and poetic “Angel Above” opens with Alice Hasen’s cozy fiddle that complements Mack’s smooth pipes, and “On A Line” follows with Rob Vermeulen’s melodic guitar and bass that suits the fuller, rootsy climate.

Further along, “Ain’t Enough” makes great use of Lee Ann Vermeulen-Roberts’ emotive keys amid the heartfelt singing, while “River Carry Me” places Hannah Lynn Cohen on fiddle via the textured and sincere delivery of the album’s best.

Getting close to the end, “Reckless” is a bit more rugged thanks to Krishna Guthrie’s dense guitar licks as Mack’s voice gets more firm, and “You Are There” exits with a folksy strummer where Katherine Winston’s sublime backing vocals won’t go unnoticed.

This is Mack’s first album in 14 years and let’s hope he doesn’t make us wait that long again to enjoy his balance of grit, richness and timeless version of Americana.
