Listen to Four Lemmas: Towards A Proof Of Identity In Music And Mathematics

A professor of mathematics, and also a musician and composer, Lawrence Udeigwe returns with a 3rd album that pulls from life experiences, his academic discipline and plenty of artistic ideas.

“Prologue: Four Lemmas” opens with Udeigwe’s expressive singing and talking alongside Josh Green’s frisky drumming, and “Lemme I: Orthogonality” follows Rade Bema’s playful bass lines that suit the animated singing and bright keys thanks to Udeigwe.

Halfway through, “Lemma II: Sparse Matrix” blends the meticulous rhythm section with melodic singing, while “Corollary II: LU Principle” sees Udeigwe’s soothing pipes amid warm keys and calm drumming before the soulful trumpet enters.

“Corollary III: Pose FM” and “Lemma IV: Stable Equilibrium” exit the listen. The former is a busy and meticulous album highlight that’s harmonic and enlightening, and the latter emits plenty of rhythm and funky moments surrounding a dreamy finish.

The record relies as much on spoken word as it does singing, and Stephen Clement and Wayne Tucker’s trumpets sure do add much to the intelligent, dynamic and jazz fueled effort .
