The pianist/composer Yvonne Rogers uses her creative upbringing in Maine as an impetus for this solo album, where complicated and rhythmic ideas unfold with an unpredictable nature.
“Luster” starts the listen soft and warm, as Rogers’ intimate keys mesmerize us quickly, and the title track follows with the dancing keys that radiate tremendous playfulness.
“Litte Dance” arrives in the middle and offers melodic gestures amid the meticulous progressions, while “Thread The Needle” emits a haunting mood that manipulates space and tension precisely.
Arriving late, “Mismatch’ balances gentle moments with animated fingers that touch on cinematic qualities, and “Exhale” finishes with a poetic and thoughtful moment of grace and beauty.
Now A Brooklyn resident, Rogers is quickly making a name for herself in the progressive jazz scene, where her adaptable skills can swing with charm, instill joy and tug on the heartstrings with its delicate presence.
