The Puerto Rican composer Dan Román is aligned with the Cuarteto Latinoamericano for these multi-cultural tracks that span many genres.
“Mvmt. 1” opens with the animated strings creating much atmosphere and detail, and “Mvmt. 2” follows with an intially swift approach that also embraces calmer waves of precise string interaction.
Further along, “Mvmt. 2 (Reverso)” is full of dramatic swells that allow for Javier Montiel’s well timed viola to add much to the rich climate, while “Mvmt. 3 (Reverso)” carries a cinematic quality thanks to Saúl Bitrán and Arón Bitrán’s meticulous violins that mesmerize us.
Landing close to the end, the busy “Mvmt. 1 (Directo + Reverso)” blends the strings with unparalleled playing, and “Mvmt. 3 (Directo + Reverso)” exits with a dynamic burst where Alvaro Bitrán’s strategic cello won’t go unnoticed or unappreciated.
A curious effort that recruits Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and even thrash metal nods, Román’s atypical version of modern classical is as innovative as it is memorable.
