This debut album from the New England Jazz Collaborative uses classic swing and West African nods for these 6 detailed tracks.
“Another Brighter Day” opens with Mitch Selib’s warm guitar and Lumanyano Mzi’s agile drums adding much to the fluid and rich delivery, and “Ol’ Liminal” follows with strong attention to mood via the well timed brass and Ellie Pruneau’s firm piano as the setting builds into controlled chaos.
The midpoint belongs to “Kiss Me Again”, and it’s an intimate moment thanks to Temidayo Balogun’s soulful sax, while “The Secret” comes with an infectious energy thanks to Chris Gagne’s animated trombone and Bijon Watson’s colorful trumpet.
“Green Turtle Strut” exits, and it benefits from Eric Hofbauer’s playful guitar, no lack of melody and a dance floor ambience that instills a good time pretty quick.
A diverse effort that spans many styles, textures and moods, the ensemble bring plenty to the table, and it’s all executed with a timeless Big Band appeal.
Travels well with: Chuck Bergeron- Bass & Face; Ize Trio- Global Prayer
