The Ize Trio, i.e. Chase Morrin, Naseem Alatrash and George Lernis, come together with plenty of guests for 9 songs that explore traditional jazz with Middle Eastern ideas.
“Flying” leads with Alatrash’s lively cello and Morrin’s colorful keys before Lernis’ playful percussion enters, and “From The Stars” follows with John Patitucci’s cautious bass entering the rich and layered climate.
Moving towards the middle, “Snæfelksjökull” blends Vasilis Kostas’ skilled lauto, Yaniv Yacoby’s bazouki and Latyh Sidiq’s violin into a frisky bout, while the title track focuses on the trio for the 8 minutes of intimacy and grace.
“Taqsim” and “Epilogue” exit the listen. The former spotlights the emotive cello, and the latter is a quick moment of sublime keys that stir the soul with much care.
A sonically adventurous outing that can also find itself in introspection, the additional help sure does add another avenue to the songwriting that’s worldly, enlightening and spiritual.
