Listen to Last Train To Memphis
This long out of print masterpiece from the Swamp Rock legend Bobby Charles lives again, where plenty of cameos from names we all know are present, as Charles’ ‘lost years’ are assembled via tracks from 1971-2003.
The title track starts the listen with Charles’ unmistakable voice alongside warm harmonica and frisky drums that immediately invites singing along, and it isn’t long until “I Spent All My Money Lovin’ You” brings grit and melody into the bluesy climate.
Deeper into the first disc, the scrappy and warm “Full Moon On The Bayou” carries a dance floor mood, while “Goin’ Fishin” is full of southern spirit that brings a soulfulness to the pastime.
Disc 2 is full of more great tunes, including the thoughtful and smooth delivery of “Secrets, as well as the horn fueled grace of “Angel Eyes”. Further still, “The Jealous Kind” comes with plenty of emotion amid the playful bass and well timed harmonica. “I Don’t See Me” lands close to the end, and offers a rich and textured moment of gentle and charming songwriting.
Originally released in 2004 and out of print when Charles passed away in 2010, the songs here span several decades but flow together seamlessly. The double CD version comes with a bonus disc and the 2xLP version hosts a bonus track that any and all fans of roots, country and rock and roll will appreciate.
