Beautiful Sin
Self-Released, 2024

A West Coast blues artist who was raised on gospel and country, Paul Black returns with a 3rd album, where the 11 sturdy songs don’t shy away from funk and soul sounds, too.
The energetic and lively “Howl & Moan” allows Black’s deep pipes and soaring guitar to shine in the bright blues delivery, and “Beautiful Sin” follows with a calmer delivery of rugged acoustic guitar and gritty singing that benefits from the thumping drums.
Deeper into the record, “Let It Rain” relies on atmosphere to make an impression, as softness builds into a rich and thick album highlight, while the meticulous guitar of “The Way” carries a groove that will get you on the dance floor.
Further still, “Losin Your Love” balances power and melody with soulful backing vocals amid playful organ, and “Go On Home” exits with plenty of textured blues that allows Black’s guitar acrobatics to radiate.
Black was fully immersed in rock’n’roll until he saw Stevie Ray Vaughan. At that point, he dove headfirst into the blues, and we’re all better off for it, cause he’s making some of the best modern blues today.
