MoMojo, 2026
9/10
The slide guitar wizard Rick Vito treats us to an instrumental album, where some excellent guests are in attendance for the timeless and meticulous blues.
The lively setting of “Vegas Jump” opens with Vito’s distinct guitar alongside Rick Reed’s animated drumming, and “Steal Away” follows with a cautious mood, as the heartfelt guitar is met with Charles Johnson’s restrained drumming.
Landing in the middle, “Albatross” is an emotive moment via Charlie Harrison’s cozy electric bass and the dreamy guitar from Vito, while “A Change Is Gonna Come” enlists Mark Horwitz’s well timed organ to the thoughtful and intimate album highlight.
Arriving late, “The Supernatural” benefits from Lynn Williams’ skilled drumming amid Vito’s intricate guitar playing, and “The Lord’s Prayer” exits with Kevin McKendree’s organ complementing Vito’s soft gestures of beauty.
Instrumental albums focused on slide guitar are in short supply, and Vito’s contribution is, like all his work, is detailed and executed flawlessly, where the complete mastery of the guitar is admirable.
Travels well with: Rick Vito- Soul Shaker; Duke Robillard- Blast Off!
