The always impressive Duke Robillard is back with a new label and 12 tunes that welcome an excellent band for the blues, swing, jazz and R&B fueled effort.
“When I Get Lucky” starts with Chris Cote’s bright pipes and Robillard’s warm guitar alongside Bruce Bears’ animated keys and the booming saxophones, and “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead (You Rascal You)” follows with Billy Novick’s lively clarinet, plus Robillard’s gruff voice.
Deeper into the listen, “Play Boy Hop” carries an infectious energy via Doug James and Mark Earley’s rich sax prowess, while “Stand By Me” showcases Mark Teixeira’s thumping drums amid the timeless blues-rock flavor.
Landing near the end, “Galactic Grease” allows for Marty Ballou’s precise bass to complement the stylish mood, and “Look A There Look A Here” exits with call and response singing that aligns with Robillard’s rhythmic guitar chops.
The record contains 3 originals, 2 instrumentals and some great interpretations, where a swingin’, rockin’ and groovin’ good time will be had by all.
