The inimitable drummer Ryan Scott fleshes out an adventurous effort, where 2 discs of primarily snare drum welcomes some auxiliary sounds, electroacoustics and vocalizations to the experimental template.
Andrew Staniland’s “ANTIGRAVITYDRUM” opens with the animated snare making for a mesmerizing and cinematic presence, and it isn’t long until Christina Volpini’s “only ghosts” radiates a nearly buzzing quality that draws us in with intrigue.
Deeper into Disc 1, “Time and Effort”, by Monica Pearce, thumps, echoes and moves curiously, while Disc 2 leads with Brian Current’s “Infantry”, that recruits spoken word about war amid the unpredictable bouts.
Further along, the avant-garde nods of “of material signs and breaks” is a percussively atypical moment thanks to Jason Doell’s vision, and Nicole Lizée’s “The Far Night.fm” exits with ambience and melody alongside the crisp drumming patterns and wordless vocal gestures that complement the nearly spiritual appeal.
Plenty of people can play the drums, but few can do it like Ryan Scott, and his adeptness with the bass drum, objects, cymbal and metal plates adds even more intrigue to these daring selections where each piece illuminates his many talents.
