The inimitable songwriter and pianist Jennifer Bellor enlists clarinet, alto sax and vibraphone for these 9 instrumental tracks that are rich and well thought out.
“Cloudbreak” opens with the flowing keys and melodic gestures that occasionally welcome a hint of rumbling, and “Serpentine Arroyo” follows with Conger’s animated clarinet and Doyle’s colorful vibes that add much color to the climate.
“Effervescence” and “Querencia” land in the middle. The former blends the lively clarinet and well timed vibes with strong attention to tonality, while the latter pays close attention to mood via the cinematic keys, wind and vibes.
“Drift Into Midnight” arrives late and uses both cautiousness and creativity in a poetic and meticulous fashion, and the title track exits with Pennock’s strategic alto sax amid the dancing piano and swirling backdrop of grace and beauty.
An effort where each track is linked thematically, the blending of jazz and classical into an engaging set of originals makes for another first rate album from Bellor.
