The saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Jeff Lederer helps showcase the first recording from the woodwind sextet by Eric Dolphy, where 3 composers are spotlighted for this unique body of work.
“Forms And Sounds, mvt 1” opens with Sara Schoenbeck’s detailed bassoon that illuminates Ornette Coleman’s vision, and “Images” follows with Katie Scheele’s well timed oboe amid Michel Gentile’s skilled fluted that’s layered precisely via the Oliver Nelson tune.
Halfway through is where “Woodwind Sextet. mvt 2” resides, which is a Dolphy original, and spotlights Gentile’s meticulous flute prowess, while “There’s A Yearnin’” moves cautiously and brings Mary LaRose’s expressive voice to the eloquence.
Arriving late, “Crucifixiton (not a word)” pairs Lederer’s strategic clarinet and Curha’s curious electronics to the atmospheric gestures, and “Lem And Aide” exits with a playful demeanor that meshes the winds and Nathan Koci’s horn into an unpredictable and memorable finish.
All the players have strong improvisational skills, and the meshing of jazz and classical with plenty of spontaneity sure is appreciated.
