Listen to Monochromatic Light (Afterlife)

A 75 minute score that’s fleshed out by Davóne Tines, Kim Kashkashian, Sarah Rothenberg, Steven Schick and the Houston Chamber Orchestra, Tyshawn Sorey took inspiration from Rothko’s late paintings and Morton Feldman’s ‘Rothko Chapel’ for this powerful piece.

The lengthy track leads with emotive strings and a light ambience, before the tense percussion from Schick complements Kashashian’s cautious viola. Rothenberg’s piano is used sparingly and often in a haunting fashion, as Tines’ very low voice enters and adds another emotional level to the mood.

Moving into the back half, the setting builds with an ominous backdrop before graceful keys take focus, and the last 10 minutes emit a droning component amid the mature strings and strategic keys.

An often chilling journey that approaches chamber and classical ideas from a very creative standpoint, Sorey’s vision is one of atypical color that makes an indelible impact.
