Listen to Sextet

An outfit with a penchant for improvisation, Pitch, Rhythm and Consciousness turn in 12 selections that surround spirituality and community.

The emotive and spiritual “I Shall Not Want” starts with the cozy sax and Kenny Wollesen’s agile drumming, and “The Beginning Of The Universe” follows with strong attention to mood, as ambience floats around Charlie Burnham’s distinct vocals.

In the middle, the rhythmic “Trouble” benefits much from Rashaan Carter’s playful bass that suits the fluid sax, while “Running In Darkness” allows for Burnham’s strategic violin to shine amid the rare intimacy.

“Shadow Box” and “Prepare A Refuge” exit the listen. The former is an improv moment fueled by Wolleson’s unpredictable drumming, and the latter utilizes bright strings, dense bass lines, moody winds and a stylish demeanor.

An aptly titled outfit, there’s inspiration from Buddhist, Christian, Jewish, Taoist and Hindu ideas, and it makes for an enlightening exercise in thought via the free jazz exploration.
