An art-funk outing from Marika Hughes, Jewlia Eisenberg and Scott Amendola, the diverse songs here are full of emotion, a wealth of hooks and an avant-garde appeal that sure has aged well.
“Goodwife Keeping” opens the listen with bright and playful instrumentation, where Amendola’s frisky drums suit the upbeat singing and unique rhythm, and “The Way It Is” follows with Hughes’ skilled cello that adds much warmth amid the lively percussion.
Further along, the bouncy bass and soaring vocals of “Ceiling View” comes with plenty of atmosphere, while “Muffoletta” buzzes with a hint of mystery, where Eisenberg’s expressive pipes guide the subdued album highlight.
Deeper still, the electric guitar resonates with charm across the vocally harmonic “Don’t Cry”, and “No More One More” exits with a funky and collaborative appeal of eclectic fun.
The resumes here are impressive, as Eisenberg is the driving force behind Charming Hostess, Hughes has roots in 2 Foot Yard and Amendola lends his talents to the Nels Cline's Singers. Their combined strength makes for tunes about sexuality that incorporates electronics and orchestral flavor that’s as original as it is relatable.
