Chris Caffery
The Jester's Court
(Metalville)
4/5 Stars
Probably better known as an integral part of Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Chris Caffery has been focusing on his solo work in recent years, and this 6th LP comes with plenty of help from members of Whitesnake, Night Ranger, and Foreigner, among others. Though Caffery handles vocal duties, guitars and some keys, his friends help shape a very eclectic and technical listen that expands on various forms of hard rock.
While the album starts off with all the hallmarks of traditional metal- giant riffs, intimidating singing and a thundering approach, later on we get audacious sounds of arena rock, moody synth, and even classic rock, as well as some nods to '80s metal and with plenty of grooves. Occasionally, Caffery's singing- which resembles a more sinister Alice Cooper- takes a break, and the vast talent of musicians comes through with a captivating instrumental, proving that the musicianship is truly what makes this album.
